Understanding Tree Stump Grinding
What is stump grinding?
Stump grinding is the process of grinding down tree stumps to a desired level with the use of machinery. The Dipperfox stump grinding system uses rotating cutting blades that shave away the stump into spiralized pieces and penetrates the soil surface to remove the entire stump and root system.
Why grind?
Removing stumps is not only aesthetically pleasing, but it also helps prevent soil erosion and foundation damage caused by tree roots, and is necessary for site preparation.

Benefits of Professional Stump Grinding
Enhanced Yard Appearance
Removing unwanted stumps can increase the value of your property by adding that curb appeal as well as protecting your home from safety hazards.
Safety and Health
Rotting stumps of all sizes can not only be hazardous to you, but your home as well. Stumps can harbor insects and pests, as well as disease that can spread to other property vegetation.
Efficiency and Cost-Effectiveness
Removing stumps with the Dipperfox Stump Crusher saves you time and money. Traditional grinders can take hours to slowly shave away an entire stump millimeter by millimeter, whereas the Dipperfox can demolish the stump and roots in minutes.

The Stump Grinding Process
Pre-Grinding Preparation
Our experts will walk your property and assess the number of stumps, access points, establish a loading zone, and identify any utility lines and safety concerns before hand.
The Grinding Process Explained
After the site preparation, our team will arrive with all our equipment ready to go. The equipment is unloaded from the trailer and the grinding begins. The operator will move from stump to stump ensuring it is completely removed.
Because the Dipperfox has such a low safety zone, there is little need for safety perimeters as is does not produce any flying debris and has 100% contactless operation.
Post-Grinding Cleanup
Once the grinding is complete, the chips can easily be raked into piles and disposed of on site in compost piles or easily be spread on the ground where they will naturally break down. This method provides great soil stability and natural organic fertilizers for pastures, yards, and developed sites.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the average cost for stump grinding near Portland and Salem?

The average cost of stump grinding in the Portland area ranges from $150-$200 per hour or per stump.
Here at DipperfoxWestcoast we do things a little differently. Because our grinders are so efficient, we do not charge per stump. We require a half day minimum plus an equipment move in fee.
This means the price is the same if you have large oversized stumps or if you have many smaller diameter stumps. This also enables communities to go in together and share the cost to have an entire neighborhood of stumps removed.

How long does the stump grinding process take?

It depends upon on a few factors; the diameter of the stump, the type of wood, and the Dipperfox model.
The Dipperfox 850PRO can remove 180 stumps per hour.
The SC600 can remove 60 stumps per hour and the SC400 can remove 40 stumps per hour.

Diameter does not define the Dipperfox, even the smaller SC400 can remove large diameter stumps just as easily as the larger units, it just takes a little longer as you grind the stump section by section. For example, a 5ft diameter cotton wood was recently removed with the SC600 and it took 50 minutes from start to finish.

Is it better to remove a stump or grind it down?

It is better to grind the stump and root system verses digging it out which leaves a large hole and an interruption in the soil which can effect ground stability.
Additionally, pulling or digging out stumps still leaves the issue of what to do with the stump remains. Trucking and hauling debris away is costly and there are several dump regulations in place that do not allow for stumps to enter landfills or recycling centers.

Are stump grinding services eco-friendly?

True to its name the Dipperfox is a friend of the forest. Because it leaves little impact on the surrounding land and forestry it is one of the most eco-friendly methods of stump removal.

Can stump grinding damage my lawn or property?

There is little to no damage to property during the grinding process. The Dipperfox has a very low safety zone and does not use a high speed grinding wheel that can break and send dangerous metal blades or teeth flying nor does it produce any projectile debris. It's contactless and quiet operation makes for ideal working conditions.

The only imprint left on the property would be track or tire marks from the excavator if ground conditions are wet or there is an excess of mud. Our experts will consider these factors when doing the initial walk through and will plan accordingly in order to maintain the integrity of the property.
